John Galvin
was born in Seattle, Washington.
For most of his life, as a professional
photographer and artist, he focused on
architectural, structural, and geometrical
forms. John's earliest works were studies from
the cityscapes of Seattle and Portland; from the
urban neighborhoods where he lived.
Later, travel throughout the US sparked an
interest in
rural landscape and natural environment. Works
from that period demonstrate the use of unique
perspective
to
create unusual art based on the lines, colors, and
shapes occurring randomly in patterns of nature.
A move to Southern Oregon in 1998
allowed John time to paint and photograph in depth the
many canyons, streams, rocks, bridges, and meadows near
his home.
It also renewed his interest in
structural forms as found on historic farmsteads, and in
the industry of the area.
Amazed by huge mill structures
towering over the land like monumental sculptures, he
looked for a way to express his awe at the interplay of
light and clouds against the towers, pipes, and
buildings of the mills.
John found it in the use of the
computer as an artistic tool to combine photography with
overlays of hand-drawn ink, pastels or acrylic.
The result reveals surreal beauty
in what, at first glance, may seem common place.
